Taking Jaguars to India [Jul. 17th, 2009|12:47 pm]

Jaguars announce they are to cease production of the jaguar X-type at Halewood and lose 300 jobs.

I’ve a better idea.

Why not transfer production of this old design to India and sell it as a (relatively) affordable Jag for India’s aspiring middle classes? It would help the finances of the Tata group, use up spare capacity and introduce the brand to a wider Asian audience. It isn’t such a bad motor either, as it happens, though they might have to raise the ride height a bit and tweak the suspension for Indian roads, slightly worse than British ones. The world’s car makers have been doing this sort of thing for years in emerging markets, so it isn’t that novel an idea.

Tata should send production of the Land-Rover Defender out there too, for the same reasons, a car even better suited to Indian roads. Just a thought.
